Mantels

Much has been said about the television replacing the fireplace as the centre of a family’s evening attention and, while that may have been true, the mantel is making a come back.  Whether a working hearth adding warmth to the winter home or a set piece bringing character to a room, mantels are taking centre stage in homes, once again.

The mantels we regularly see at Artefacts date from the 1850s to the 1930s and are typically made of good quality woods – pine in the more modest mantels and, for the more elaborate pieces, oak, cherry and walnut are not uncommon.  Occasionally, mantels of marble, limestone and slate make an appearance.

Many older mantels are compatible with modern burning systems but, if you are starting new, try to have one or two insert options on hand when looking for an old mantel as the openings can vary widely.

If you can’t find an antique mantel to suit your needs, perhaps Artefacts could build you one using salvaged lumber and trim.  Bring a few photo examples of what you would like to see and we’ll see what we can provide!
